Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 22 February 2020
Come! Live in the Light!
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
~ Matthew 5:13-16
Dear St. Clare School Families,
Thank you to those who have already responded to the call to join us for our Day of Service. Many parents choose St. Clare because of the focus on social justice. This is an opportunity for all of us to live out our baptismal promise and fulfill the mission of our Catholic faith. Thank you to all of you who have donated items or funds to purchase items, including a student who saved up money he earned from chores; to our Student Ambassadors, Girl Scouts and Student Council; to our parent leadership: Theresa Tinio, Katy Kerns, Michele Cuni, Leana Dalton and Cyndi Banaag for executing this vision to build the partnership between the school, the families and the parish; and to the teachers and staff for focusing on Catholic social teaching to build a community of social justice advocates.

CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY: Lunar New Year Celebration
On Tuesday, February 25, our school will be celebrating the Year of the Rat with a festive dragon parade and presentation of gifts to our teachers after morning assembly. Students will enjoy a feast during lunch. Place your order for this special lunch from the school store. We honor and celebrate the rich traditions of our ancestries and we recognize how they form us into better global citizens. Thank you to Jen Pham and our parent volunteers for putting this meaningful celebration for our school community!

MID-YEAR CYCLE WCEA/ACS WASC ACCREDITATION VISIT ON FEBRUARY 25
We welcome Ms. Liz Olson, Asst. Principal at St. Martin of Tours and Ms. Ronda Byrne Clark, Vice Principal at St. Frances Cabrini to St. Clare to affirm the good work that is being done by our teachers, staff, parents and students. Many thanks to our office staff and administrators as well as our hospitality committee, to the Lunar New Year Committee, to parents and teachers and other shareholders who contributed to the preparation for this day. Most of all, I am grateful to Mrs. Filion, our Vice Principal for Academic Excellence who facilitated the process of self-assessment and refined the writing of the report. Congratulations to her and to all of you for your hard work towards Improving Student Learning at St. Clare School!
END OF THE SECOND TRIMESTER
This Friday is the end of the second trimester, the last day of the grading period. Please connect with your student’s teacher(s) if you have any questions regarding their progress to date. We are looking forward to more growth in our last trimester of the 2019-2020 school year. Continue to practice reading with your children (fluency for primary students; comprehension, inferences, checking for understanding and finding evidence in the text for our middle grades). These important skills are the foundation for content acquisition that they will need forever! Mastery comes with practice and evidence is clear that when students are struggling, it is a great likelihood that they have not had the practice they need to succeed.
It is also important to note that if the student is putting forth the effort and mastery is slow to come, parents and teachers should raise concern so that together, we can look for ways to help the student access the skills necessary to reach a level of success or seek additional support to become successful readers. Let us focus our efforts on literacy for all of our learners.
We are excited to begin the third trimester!

CHANGE OUR HEARTS, O GOD: Our 2020 Lenten Journey
On Ash Wednesday we begin our Lenten journey; a time of prayer, sacrifice, and giving. It’s a time to change our hearts and our way of thinking. During Lent we renew our commitment to follow Christ and to live out the Gospel values. May the Holy Spirit give us the strength to act justly, the courage to love tenderly, and the faith to walk humbly with our God. We pray this Lenten journey changes our lives by leading us ever deeper into the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection!
Our Lenten collections this year will include the Catholic Relief Services rice bowls and our school-wide outreach of the One Love Campaign for Human Development.
Please return the rice bowl (paper money or check) donations by Friday, April 3rd. If submitting checks, please make out to St. Clare School and on the memo line write: rice bowl.
